Beaux Arts gallery in Bath have been hosting my biennial solo show for over twenty years now. My Bath Solo Show 2024 opens this Friday 15th November and runs through until Christmas.
This is a rare opportunity to view a large body of my work in one place. There will be 42 sculptures on exhibit, the majority inspired by sightings made in the wild. My recent Festival of Wildlife trip to Tanzania, for example, gave me the opportunity to observe wildebeest and jackals at close quarters.
Naturally, my favourite animal the wild dog will feature in the exhibition, along with popular subjects, including elephant and rhino. These animals always have another story to tell through the medium of my sculptures.
Maned wolves will also be featured in my Bath solo show 2024. Many years ago as a student, I was privileged to meet maned wolves with young pups at Chester Zoo. I had the opportunity to feed them and spend time with them in their enclosures. Maned wolves are characterised by a distinctive gait, perhaps due to their extra long legs, and the intensity in their expressions.
Following another Festival of Wildlife trip to Spitsbergen, Norway, I wanted to explore polar bear behaviour with my series of sculptures, Sliding into Slumber. Polar bears are so charismatic and make fantastic subjects for animal sculpture.
A subject closer to my home here in the UK is the brown hare. Only the other day I had to wait while a hare ran up the road ahead of me before traversing across a field. What a thrill! It inspired me to sculpt the three hares in this year’s exhibition.
I won’t be able to attend the private view in person, because I’m presently leading an animal sculpture safari in Zambia. But I will be spending a day at the gallery on my return. The date for this will confirmed on social media.
I hope you can visit my Bath solo show 2024 in the beautiful Georgian gallery in the heart of Bath.
